Ma'am, ya goin' to Greensboro?
(posted by Heather) Becci & I left Madison 'round 2 pm on Saturday 9/16 and followed a route (pronounced "root" when heading south) provided to us by a Milwaukee-native now living in Greensboro. It turned out to be great advice so if anyone's feeling up for a roadtrip, here's a general sense of how to get from there (WI) to here (NC)...
I-90 S to I-39
I-39 S to Normal/Bloomington IL to I-74 E
I-74 E to Urbana IL to Danville to I-465
I-465 S around Indy IN back to I-74
I-74 E to Cinci OH to I-75
I-75 S to I-640 S around Knoxville TN to I-40
I-40 E to Greensboro!
On Saturday, it took us 7.5 hours to get just south of Cinci and then on Sunday, it took us about 9 hours to get to Greensboro.
The drive was easy and really beautiful once we got into TN and through the mountains. The total mileage was 995 and here's a few highlights we experienced along the way:
- Mile 228 (IL): Homemade roadside billboards for gunssavelives.com
- Mile 235:1st Confederate Flag sighting (not on a PT, will make more sense later)
- Mile 345 (IN): Jeff Gordon Blvd
- Mile 379: Gas $2.199/gal
- MIle 415: 1st Waffle House sign
- Mile 485 (KY): FoxNews over breakfast - we're really in the South now...
- Mile 629: 3 PTs within 100 yards (again, will make more sense later)
- Mile 634: Col. Sander's Birthplace Cafe
- Mile 6?? (TN): Scratch-off lottery ticket winning of 1 free ticket (which was a loser)
- Mile 693: 1st Sonic sign
- Mile 834 (NC): Billy Graham Training Center at The Cove
- Mile 849: Becci thinks the roadsign for "Old Fort, NC" is "Old Fart, NC"
- Mile 905: Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet
